Don Williams Sweeps 2006 IBO Crossbow Class

August 16, 2006
Shooting his hand-decorated TenPoint QX-4 crossbow, longtime IBO shooter and Jackson, Michigan resident, Don Williams, swept all three legs of both the 2006 IBO Northern and Southern Nationals this year and capped that achievement with a convincing victory recently in the World Championships at Snowshoe Mountain, WV. This is the second year in a row he has won both Nationals.

At the World Championship Sunday shoot-off, Williams beat second place finisher Gary Topper of Rootstown, OH 472 to 434. Gene Bair, from North Canton, OH finished third at 434. All three of the top finishers competed with TenPoint equipment.

“I’m a 3D junkie who’s addicted to shooting” Williams said. One of the top IBO compound shooters for years, Williams blew out his shoulder several years ago and had to switch to a crossbow in order to continue competing.

Even though he now competes and hunts with a crossbow, he continues to instruct compound shooting at Schupbach’s Sporting Goods in Jackson, MI.

Schupbach’s conducts one of the largest archery league programs in the country, and Williams, a Master Level instructor, is justifiably proud that he has run more than 10,000 archery students though his instructional program in the fifteen years he has worked there.

While he acknowledges that the crossbow competition is plenty tough at the IBO tournaments, he hopes to see the number of participants grow. The fact that there are not more crossbow shooters competing baffles Williams because the IBO website chat room is well populated with crossbow hunters logging on regularly to talk shop.

“I think over time we’ll see more shooters.” He said. “But, way too many 3D venues still do not allow crossbows on their courses, so we just don’t have as many opportunities to shoot 3D as compound shooters do.”

It’s a shame.” Williams concluded. “Crossbows actually present more of a shooting challenge at long distances than compound bows.”

Williams plans to defend his titles in 2007 and encourages talented crossbow hunters across the country to join in the fun. It is a great way to tune-up for hunting season.
